Raising the standard of wind training in Australia

Australia’s wind sector is expanding at pace, with projects increasing in size, complexity and technical scrutiny. As timelines tighten and compliance expectations become more rigorous, one question continues to surface across the industry: how do we ensure technicians are truly prepared for the realities of turbine work, rather than simply certified on paper?

FairWind, in partnership with the European Wind Academy, is addressing this challenge by delivering Global Wind Organisation (GWO) Basic Technical Training (BTT) across Australia. Instead of relying on fixed training centres, we bring the training directly to the workforce through a fully equipped mobile container facility. This flexible model allows us to deliver high-quality, hands-on instruction at client sites and regional hubs nationwide, supporting projects wherever they are located.

For a country as geographically vast as Australia, this approach means training can move as projects move, reducing unnecessary travel, limiting downtime and removing logistical barriers, all while maintaining internationally recognised standards.

Our training expertise

GWO BTT is the globally recognised benchmark for foundational technical competence in the wind industry, designed to provide the essential knowledge and practical skills required to work safely and effectively on turbines.

In Australia, we are currently delivering three core BTT modules:

  • Instalacja
  • Bolt Tightening
  • Mechanical

Each module plays a distinct role in preparing technicians for real site conditions. The Bolt Tightening module goes beyond the mechanics of tightening bolts correctly. It explores how to plan, document and review bolt tightening tasks, using scenario-based exercises to prepare participants for company-specific bolt training and real project requirements.

The Mechanical module enables participants to carry out basic mechanical tasks under supervision, helping them build confidence with tools, components and turbine systems in a controlled environment before stepping onto site.

The Installation module focuses on working safely with basic installation tasks under supervision in a turbine environment. It is particularly significant because it is a prerequisite for turbine installation work and supports OEM and wider project compliance requirements.

Each module runs over 4.5 days and leads to a globally recognised GWO certificate, registered in WINDA, giving both technicians and employers assurance of consistent international standards.

Why hands-on training matters

E-learning has become a growing trend within the industry, largely due to its convenience, flexibility and lower upfront cost. While digital learning has its place, wind turbine work is high risk and highly technical, and competence cannot be developed through theory alone.

Technicians need to handle real components, use tools under supervision and experience practical scenarios where they have the opportunity to make mistakes in a controlled setting. This allows them to understand the consequences and refine their approach before working at height or within complex mechanical systems.

For employers, this practical approach delivers clear, tangible benefits. It reduces the likelihood of safety incidents, strengthens alignment with OEM standards and ensures technicians arrive on site ready to contribute from day one. It also lowers operational risk during critical installation phases, where errors can have significant cost and schedule implications.

Instructor-led training in small groups makes a visible difference. With a maximum of eight participants per course, engagement remains high and instructors can provide focused feedback and individual support. This is structured, immersive preparation designed to build genuine capability, not passive participation.

Training built for projects, not classrooms

As Australia’s wind sector continues to mature, expectations on technicians and contractors will only increase. Certification alone is not enough. What ultimately matters is capability, confidence and the ability to apply skills safely in real-world conditions.

By delivering GWO-certified, hands-on training where it is needed most, FairWind is helping to build a compliant, confident and job-ready workforce across Australia.
