Site Manager Marcin Smolik shares his journey from trainee technician with FairWind through to his current role as site manager.\u00a0 He tells us why the wind industry is a challenging and dynamic place to build your career and what skills you need to succeed.<\/p>

How did you begin your career with FairWind?<\/strong><\/p>

I was working at a yacht shipyard in Denmark in 2009 through a recruitment agency when they posted an advert looking for candidate to train and work in wind turbines. I decided to try something new and challenge myself in a completely different environment and apply for the training placement.<\/p>

After passing the training I started as a wind turbine installation technician, before moving into service technician roles, both onshore and offshore. From there I became a service team leader, then in 2018\/2019, moved into the Engineering and Quality Department in FairWind\u2019s Polish office. That experience led me to my current role as a site manager.<\/p>

What does a typical day look like for you now?<\/strong><\/p>

In my current role as a site manager, a typical day is very intensive and dynamic, filled with ongoing activities on site. The day starts at 7:00 am with a toolbox talk and continues into the evening. It involves dealing with a lot of incoming information that requires quick adaptation and fast, well considered decision making.<\/p>

What do you enjoy about working on site?<\/strong><\/p>

There\u2019s always something exciting happening on site, and I enjoy environments where new challenges appear. Office work also has plenty of challenges, but site work has a unique energy. And of course, I had an opportunity to travel around Europe starting with my first site in Maida, Italy, back in 2010. After that, I have worked in Germany, Sweden, Denmark, and the UK, both onshore and offshore.<\/p>

What advice would you give to someone thinking about joining the wind sector?<\/strong><\/p>

The wind sector is challenging. Be prepared for hard work but also great opportunity to grow. If You are open to learning and not afraid of challenges, it can offer a very rewarding and-long term career. You need to be ready to step out of your comfort zone. Focus on teamwork and attitude. Skills can be learned but being reliable, supportive and willing to help others is what really makes the difference on projects in the wind sector.<\/p>

What practical skills does a good technician need?<\/strong><\/p>

You need to be comfortable using manual tools and basic electrical tools, but any hands\u2011on experience like working in a workshop is helpful at the start of your career.<\/p>

And very importantly: you must be comfortable with heights!<\/p>

Many people aren\u2019t completely honest about that at the beginning, and being 120\u2013150 metres up, especially when the turbine moves in the wind, can be a real challenge. It can feel similar to seasickness for some people.<\/p>

Beyond practical skills, what personal qualities make someone a strong technician?<\/strong><\/p>

Attitude is just as important as technical ability. Good technicians are proactive, open\u2011minded and above all team players If you have the right approach, adapting to new situations becomes much easier.<\/p>

We want to attract both new and experienced technicians. What do you think might encourage experienced technicians to join FairWind?<\/strong><\/p>

While we all think of salary as the obvious factor, I think there\u2019s more to it than that when you are looking for new opportunities.<\/p>

Firstly, safety and quality standards are extremely high here at FairWind and I find that experienced technicians really value that.<\/p>

Second, there is real opportunity for growth. My own career is a good example \u2014 you can progress from basic technician to management if you show the right attitude. The sky is the limit!<\/em><\/p>

And finally, FairWind has a strong and stable project pipeline, which means plenty of opportunities across different roles and locations.<\/p>

Any final thoughts to share with potential recruits?<\/strong><\/p>

FairWind is a place where you can build a long\u2011term career. If you bring the right attitude and willingness to learn, you can grow, specialise, and progress far. There\u2019s a lot of work, a lot of opportunities, and a lot of room to develop.<\/p>
